SATCHMO CLUB STRUT

The Jazz Centennial Celebration will host SATCHMO CLUB STRUT, a club crawl in the Decatur-Frenchmen Street music corridor on Friday, August 3rd from 7:00pm to 2:00am. For the price of a $20 wristband, jazz lovers will be admitted to a number of New Orleans' premiere music clubs, featuring top jazz bands honoring the Louis Armstrong legacy for one special night.

The SATCHMO CLUB STRUT is a fundraiser. The proceeds will benefit the New Orleans Jazz Centennial Celebration's jazz education programs. NOJCC is a tax exempt organization created in 1994 by the Louisiana Music Commission to develop its statewide school and community touring jazz education programs. Abita Beer, Offbeat Magazine, and WSJZ FM are proud sponsors of this event.

The Satchmo Club Strut is only one of the many Satchmo Summer Fest events planned during the first weekend of August to celebrate the Louis Armstrong Centennial. For a listing of all planned activities visit Satchmo Summer Fest home page and www.satchmo.com

In 1998 a Blue Ribbon Committee of jazz historians and activists were called together by the Louisiana Music Commission (LMC) to explore the possibility of starting a celebration of one hundred years of jazz. After a successful series of meetings, New Orleans Jazz Centennial Celebration (NOJCC) was formed as a non-profit organization committed to bringing resources together to bolster and preserve the cultural processes that produce music in Louisiana. NOJCC is an ongoing series of events and programs honoring America's most significant original artistic contribution to the world-jazz!

Jazz evolved in the unique blend of cultures found in the New Orleans area. As the birthplace of America's music, New Orleans will be the central focus of activities; however, events will take place throughout the state and beyond. All are invited to participate, and all ideas for events will be considered.

During this celebration of jazz, countries around the world will exchange music and musicians. In particular, the state of Louisiana invites both artists and appreciators of music to visit and experience the sound of the land where jazz, blues, R&B, rock and roll, gospel, zydeco, Latin, fold, country and traditional Cajun music all continue to evolve.

THE STORY BEHIND THE CELEBRATION

Pianist and native son Ellis Marsalis, patriarch of America's first family of jazz, announced New Orleans Jazz Centennial Celebration at the 1994 International Association of Jazz Educators annual meeting. Events began on January 2, 1995, at half-time ceremonies of the USF&G Sugar Bowl, which utilized the Jazz Centennial theme. In addition, a resolution proclaiming 1995 as the year of New Orleans' Jazz Centennial Celebration was introduced to the U.S. Senate by Senators J. Bennett Johnston and John Breaux. And even the president caught the spirit: Upon signing the Historical Jazz Park bill, President Clinton announced the New Orleans Jazz Centennial Celebration.

LOYOLA SUMMER JAZZ CAMP

In June 1995 NOJCC joined forces with Loyola University for a Summer Jazz Band Camp presenting jazz bands, improvisation, theory, ear training, appreciation, arranging and individual lessons, as well as, field trips.

JAZZ FEASTS

Jazz Feasts have given both citizens and visitors in greater New Orleans lively lunch hour community concerts in shopping centers, parks and other public places. Always free, these concerts have always presented a variety of jazz styles with support from Freeport McMoRan, the Downtown Development District, the N. O. Jazz & Heritage Foundation, and the Arts Council of New Orleans.
