Make a list of jazz related words or terms and post in the class. Play Unscramble The Word or Hangman using those words.

Play a jazz selection. Instruct students to write a journal entry based on the selection.

Use jazz related story starters:
* Traditional Jazz makes me...
* Jazz is ...
* If I were a jazz musician, I would...
* If I were a saxophone...

Provide students with a copy of a biography. Instruct them to circle all verbs, nouns, adverbs, proper nouns, adjectives and/or any other parts of speech being studied at that time.

Write a fictional story involving one or more jazz artists.

Write a review of a jazz recording.

Alphabetize the names of the Artist of the Day artists.

Prepare a chart with categories such as ACTION words, QUIET words, NOISY words, etc. Instruct student to complete the chart with jazz related words.

Provide students with copies of the music entertainment section of a newspaper. Note both ads and columns such as Geraldine Wykoff in Gambit or Keith Spera in Lagniappe. Instruct students to identify the who, what, why and where in the advertisements and announcements.

Using the above columns, instruct students to identify comparative analogies used to describe artists' music in the writings, (clear as a bell, loud as thunder, etc.) as well as identify the number of different synonyms used to describe one particular (such as 'sound') or similar things etc.
