Read a jazz related article, circle all the numbers. (Determine if you want to also include numbers that are written out.)

Provide students with a page size drawing of a musical instrument. (Some are included in this packet.) Instruct them to color or shade all circles, rectangles, triangles, etc.

Calculate the difference in miles or kilometers from New Orleans to Jazz Festivals around the world - Cancun Jazz Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, St. Louis Jazz Festival, Canadian Jazz Festival, Senegal Jazz Festival, Newport (RI) Jazz Festival, Jazz a la Plantation in Martinique, etc.

Check record store advertisements. Determine the dealer's cost of selected recordings if an additional 20%, 30%, etc. were used as mark-up. Determine how much taxes would be using current sales tax rate.

Using the information provided in biographies of deceased artists, determine their age at the time of their death.

Choose a biography, write all the numbers in expanded notation, Roman Numerals, etc.

Check the classified section of the newspaper for the sale of musical instruments. Record the prices of instruments which could be used in the various jazz bands such as Traditional, Brass, Contemporary, Progressive, etc. Add and give the total cost of the instruments.

Compare the size of various bands, counting number of members, noting the difference in sounds between large and small groups. Compare these to the number of members in a symphony orchestra. What percentage is the size_ Count the overall number of musicians in a large band or orchestra, then count the number of musicians in each individual section. (For example 15 violins, 10 trumpets, 3 drummers, etc.) Determine percentage ratio of each section to the whole. (Brass makes up 1/3 of or 33% of orchestra, etc.).
